Vegan Road Trip: Final Day

x500-48We woke up earlier than we would have liked to start our last day of the vegan road trip. We have had a lot of fun along the way with still more planned for the trip home. All good journeys need to start with a good meal, and our breakfast didn’t disappoint.

We stopped at a restaurant that Laura had found earlier: Monty's Blue Plate Diner. They had several tasty sounding vegan options on the breakfast menu. I ordered the veggie hash and she had the French toast. Yum!

After breakfast we visited the Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison. My friends Joe and Lisa had recommended this place earlier, and it did not disappoint. It was a really nice conservatory. I liked that it had multiple levels, many live animals including birds, fish, insects, and geckos, and the waterfall was a real treat. x500-56

Walking around smelling the flowers stirred our appetites, so it was off to the next food destination in Wisconsin Dells.

We stopped at the Cheeze Factory, a 100% vegan restaurant for lunch. The menu had so many choices, it was difficult to choose. I’d like to stay in the motel next door for a couple days to work my way through the menu and bakery case.

Completely stuffed, we rolled ourselves back in the car and started driving back to Minnesota. On the way we found a nice winery, Burr Oak Winery, near New Lisbon, WI. We both sampled a few wines which led to a purchase of a few bottles. x500-94

New Lisbon is an interesting town. They had a helicopter and tank guarding their community center!

We wanted to finish our trip by visiting the new vegan café in Minneapolis called Truce. We were both still very full from lunch at the Cheeze Factory, so we ordered juice. I really wanted to try some of their hummus. They just finished making a fresh batch too!

It seemed fitting to sip our juice while admiring the beautiful (but windy) spring day at Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. The wind surfers were having a blast!

We both had a great time spending time together exploring new places. I am amazed how many places we were able to squeeze into a long weekend trip. I can’t wait for our next vegan road trip. Let us know if you have any suggestions and thanks for coming along with us!

Check back soon as we will both continue writing up the reviews for the places we went. I will post more about the two conservatory visits on my garden blog: Everyday Urban Gardener.

  1. Fun. I am coming into these posts late as we did our own road trip to Tacoma and Seattle Friday through Sunday and now I am playing catch up. Ate our way through many vegan only restaurants. Some awesome meals, some mediocre.
