Monty’s Blue Plate Diner–Madison, WI

The last day of our vegan road trip, we stopped for breakfast at Monty’s Blue Plate Diner. Laura had found it a few days earlier when we were looking for a delicious vegan breakfast. It looked good, so we couldn’t pass it up.

It was easy to find, and we found space in their parking lot. We both liked the kitschy feel from the outside. The old gas pump completed the look and Laura might have posed for a picture with it.

The inside followed suit along with classic American diner aesthetic. I liked the colors, brightness, and how it felt clean. I have been in a few other diners that felt dirty. We were seated promptly by the friendly staff and set about scouring the menu.

Our server was very familiar with the vegan options and answered our questions quite handily. I was disappointed they didn’t have a chai on the menu. I did like that vegan and vegetarian items were clearly labeled on the menu. It’s no fun playing 20 questions with the staff.

I ordered the vegetarian hash as vegan. They substituted the eggs for tofu scramble. The has also included tempeh, peppers, onions, and potatoes all grilled together to perfection. It was a huge plate of food. It also came with three different choices of vegan toast. I ordered the rye. I enjoyed the side of fruit as well. It was a challenge to finish everything.

Laura ordered the french toast. Check out her blog: One Girl, Two Cities to see what she thought of her meal. I thought the toast was done just right.

The service was good and the food was delicious. Both our meals and coffee came to $20 after tax.. Check out the fun poem on the bottom of the receipt. I especially like the yum yum yum.

  1. What a great place. Vegan breakfast options on a menu are the hardest to find at least for us. We've been known to just order hash brows as the only option. Sigh
