Hardest Part About Being Vegan

Hardest Part of Being Vegan

I’ve seen several variations of this image or something similar, so I decided to make my own version. Many of them have the the majority as something like “dealing with idiots” or “dealing with morons”.  Sure, there are idiots and morons out there, but I find it is more ignorance than anything else.

Most people didn’t grow up eating veg*; I sure didn’t. They can’t quickly come up with a veg* meal. “What do you eat?!” They don’t realize that fruit and veggies are a delicious meal on their own. It makes me laugh when someone says, “I’ve never had vegan food.” Really?? You’ve never had an apple? Lettuce? Rice? Carrots? Banana? Frozen veggies? Mixed nuts? hehe.

If you are not veg* and someone asks you to pick a place to eat, then I would recommend happycow.net and vegguide.org. Both have location specific listings. ExploreVeg also has a great list of resources. Finally, there is also my recipe page for tasty ideas.

If you are vegetarian or vegan, what do you think is the hardest part?

  1. Trust issues, we're vegans with trust issues. Even though someone says it's vegan, do they really know what "vegan" means? Which leads to token salad. Iceberg lettuce and shredded carrots is garnish, not a vegan menu option.
Also, the jokes get old, we've heard them all. However, a friend did offer a kind joke I appreciate: "You can always spot a vegan, they lean toward the sun". Yes we do... yes we do.

    1. trust issues is a good one. I will agree with you on that. I've been burned before on that one and fed something that made me sick. bleh.
the jokes do get old as well. I like the lean towards the sun!

  2. I guess I don't really think about it much but I do know that I generally feel a lot better with a non-animal protein diet. But I find it difficult to maintain...

What makes it difficult for you?

    2. Cooking for others and eating out. As you are aware, very few places in Fairbanks. And times like now when I'm in Barrow, fresh anything costs a fortune. So it's to just get whatever...

  3. It's not a problem, but funny. When traveling we stop at a grocery store, have the deli make a sandwich and buy Tofurkey that we add once we reach a park or someplace to eat. The deli workers sometimes get really disgusted when we don't want meat or cheese. A few times I think it has ruined their day....people are funny.

  4. The ignorance is the hardest part. But the trust issue is there too when eating out. Sure that burger joint has a veggie burger but I bet it is cooked on the same grill using the same spatula covered in meat ick. No thank you.

    1. Trust is a hard one sometimes. I've been told something is vegan and then asked about the ingredients and then found condensed milk or eggs in the list. Very frustrating. Shared frying or grilling is a tough one too.
